Happy Independence day :) ye ye ye .. cos today we don't have to go to office, don't have to struggle with traffic jams , we can enjoy a mid week holiday and post wishes and comments on FB..
Why should we care if the country is in distress, suffering in the hands of the corrupt, debauchery is awarded and truth seeking RTI activists are slaughtered mercilessly. Where mean, shrewd and corrupt hold high positions honest and hardworking are made to slog and suffer. Half of the country still doesn't get 1 meal everyday. And we export lakhs of tons of food.
But we are happy cos our salary has hiked (though taxes and inflation will eventually loot you anyways), we have booked a flat (your flat will not have good infra of roads, drainage, water and electricity), and bought a new car (though you will be spending large amount of time in traffic jams).
Things doesn't look that bad if you just think on your personal level and your view of bigger picture is blinded by your greed.
For all those happy souls celebrating the independence day, I have a story to tell.
Well it is not a story but few points from the events that took place during last couple of years in our 64th and 65th year of Independence.
This is how it began:
For several years many NGOs were fighting for the RTI act, eventually after much struggle it got incorporated because most of the people in our political arena did not find this as a very sharp tool which could possibly harm them.
RTI draws first blood : Commonwealth scam got unearthed.
Everyday the newspapers are flooded with news about how taxpayers money was spent mercilessly,
Treadmills taken for rent for lakhs of rupees when you can buy it cheaper, cost of toilet papers went in crores, the preparation of games village was pathetic and when the whole world was laughing on us our ministers were commenting that "we have different standards of hygine".
All this drama and nations agony resulted in 1 scape got Kalmadi, who was sent to Jail for few months.
But the question remained, where did all the scammed money go? In swiss bank accounts of all the accomplice?Sheila,Sonia,Manmohan,Chidambaram,Congress party fund..
Lesson 1 of independent India : Do whatever you like, loot in any matter you like, nobody can do anything to you!!! (how is it different from the British Raj?)
After a few months 2G scam got revealed, this time everyone hoped of a better prosecution, but the result was almost the same ; couple of scapegoats and all the masterminds and their bosses got away with the money.
All this lead to Anna Movement, finally people of independent India got a ray of hope.
It was a replication of 1975 JP movement, and everyone thought change is knocking on the door now..
But, nothing happened, Congress party divided Team Anna, first they tried to target Anna himself by making up a story of some 1.5 lakh rupees spent on his birthday party, which was sponsored by some industrialist. But country did not like this and hence it backfired. Then they started assault on Kiran Bedi,
The case was : Whenever she is called for a function/conference as a speaker or guest, she is given business class tickets, and if She would have travelled in Economy class she would get some waiver from govt.
So she took the amount from sponsers and sacrifised the comfort of business class and travelled in economy so that some money could be saved which she used for her NGO.
First of all it would just be a matter of max 2 to 3 lakhs (Congress's Kalmadi looted this amount in just buying 1 day stock of tissue rolls).
Secondly, she did not take this money from the nation, it was from the sponsors.
Clearly a step by the congress to create a divide and mistrust in people because no one would actually go into details but would just read the headlines, that there is some controversy surrounding Kiran Bedi.
Lesson 2 of Independent India : If some one protests, kill them royally, malign the image in public, cos if you have money and power you are absolute God.(Again a peculiar trait of the Raj)
Hefty amount of India's coal reserve is sold for peanuts and profits in swiss accounts. Now this is very similar to what the British used to do.
The taxes are just awesome, you give tax when you get salary, that same money which has been taxed once, when you spend on restaurant for food, you again pay around 15% tax.
Whenever there is a transaction there is tax deducted again and again.Which is not only technically incorrect but moreover gives a slap on our faces stipulating "Yes it is wrong and unfair, what will you do?"
Who says India doesn't have a system? We have one of the strongest system to exploit , simply superb laws many of them are so old that even Britishers of ancient times would laugh.
Well, our laws were mostly copy pasted from British India laws!! awesome!! Many of our laws are still the same which were used by the Britishers to curb the nation and exploit the masses.
I love this country, not because of all the above fascinating reasons but because even after so much chaos we are surviving and progressing, I feel really proud of many people whose names are not flashed in news headlines(cos that doesn't sell) who are working so hard that even after all this mess, we are some how still progressing.
So I wish Happy Independence day to those few Thousands of people who are still honest and hardworking because of them I still get water (though polluted), electricity (though only 8-10 hours a day) roads (though filled with pot-holes) ,Police protection (though many of the times we need protection from police itself).
We can book online Railway tickets (though availability and quality is still a big issue)
You can get mobile very easily and also you can get cheap internet and write blogs and post them on facebook , there is some freedom left I suppose, but till when?
Happy Independence Day to Everyone... Enjoy your holiday

Nicely captured. I also feel frustrated but at the end of the day getting frustrated doesn't work.
I see this kind of situation can not remain forever. System is big enough to change. I see it also has a saturation. So making sure your voice is raised and heard is important.
However in shorter term, it's important to do whatever one can to make a difference in people's lives. That's in hand of every individual.
Most of the time, we whine about the system, our lunch discussions are always about poor state of our system. So as you rightly mentioned, we are happy in our cocoon. However when it comes in doing something, I personally find very few souls who actually do what they say.
